Hal & Mal's (June 24, 2006)

And the No More Bullshit Tour 2006 rolls on...

We didn't have a definite setlist, but we played mostly originals and a few covers such as:

Streets Of Bakersfield
Great Atomic Power
Sam's Place
I Know A Little
Excuse Me I Think I've Got A Heartache
Honky Tonkin'
Honky Tonk Man (I think we played that)

That's fewer covers than we've played in a long, long time (with the exception of the beginning of the No More Bullshit Tour of 2006).

We started the set with a request from Sonya Sorrels, who was celebrating her birthday with her husband and some friends--she wanted to hear "Sometimes" off of "Up On Blocks."

We played all the new tunes, which so far are:

The Avenues (Brad sings)
Carolina Divorce Song (Chris sings)
California PSA (Steve sings)
Dust Of The 70s (Clinton sings)

Atmosphere

There was a friendly atmosphere in the joint as we knew lots of the peeps who showed up. Here's a roll call:

Natalie and Lucy, Sonya and her gang, Bobby and his friends, the Goodman County boys and their significant others, Paula and her posse...sorry if I left someone out...

When we got to the restaurant, there were no customers and we feared that didn't bode well for the show. We thought maybe the "state of emergency" declared in Jackson might be a problem, but the place did fill up with friends, so that's cool...

All in all, we had a good time playing and hanging out with everybody who was there...if you have any memories to share, please do...

Nick's Ice House 6/23/06

Elliott of Buffalo Nickel here. We enjoyed breaking new ground at Nick's. Nick's has been around for ages and was a great help to the Hattiesburg community during the aftermath of Katrina. The band enjoyed the vibe there, as well as the sound in the club. The Nickel was well received by those in attendance, and those people included Nashville producer R.S. Field, and Nashville video guru Perry Trest of Postdigital.

Perry was with the late 70s-early 80s Hattiesburg band "Bonnington Truce" who are in the process of doing a documentary on the early 80s Hattiesburg music scene. After Bonnington Truce's breakup in 1982, I (Elliott) formed a band with Truce members Pat Wallace and Jeff Bridges (Three Humans on Old School Records). I shot segments for their documentary and they also shot some footage of the Nickel show. Bonnington Truce jammed during a break playing three original songs, with Buffalo Nickel's Clinton Kirby joining in on Lap Steel.

Buffalo Nickel enjoyed a chat with R. S. Field, who has been listening to the band's first CD (Up On Blocks). We made sure he left with a copy of "Noise and Conversation". It was great to hear his positive comments on what we have done and what are doing. In his words, "don't change a thing".

Also of note is that the entire show was recorded, portions of which may be released in the near future. Photos from that night may surface on honknroll.com. We hope to return to Nick's soon!

SHOOTER JENNINGS & BUFFALO NICKEL

We opened for Shooter Jennings & The .357s last night (Wednesday, June 14)at Mugshots in Hattiesburg. The place was packed--so much so that there were barricades in front of the stage.

Here's the setlist:

1. California PSA
2. Find Me A Crowd
3. Dust Of The 70s
4. Out Of The Picture
5. El Camino
6. The Avenues
7. Slow Death
8. Carolina Divorce Song
9. I Am Evil
10. Alien Queen

And we also did "Walkin'" towards the beginning...an all-original set with 3 new songs (California, Dust, and Carolina) but it was received well by the crowd nonetheless.

Did I mention the place was packed? There were people waiting outside to get in even after we were done. I think we all agreed that it had to be the sweatiest show we've ever played...

Didn't get to meet Shooter, but his band was cool and they kicked ass.

We also were surprised with a visit from our old pal and soon-to-be-partner Justin Martin, aka The Big Tomato. And our pal Rob Ross was on the monitors...
